Kitchen and furniture designer Johnny Grey is a visiting professor of Design and Kitchen Culture at Bucks New University. He sees today's kitchen as a 'sitting room in which you cook', and here Johnny gives some practical tips to consider.


Kitchens are often overplanned and indeed misplanned, especially when the cabinetry is locked into alcoves and faces the wall or overfills the room. A lack of wall space makes it harder for people to make the space homely with paintings and paraphernalia.


The contents of your kitchen are part of its overall design. Historically, people enjoyed the sight of food on display in bowls; they hung cooking utensils from racks and arranged their china for aesthetic pleasure. Appreciation of these smaller components is on the rise again.
