As the Obama family settles into the White House, speculations abound on what kind of nation - and what kind of home - they will create. While a comfortable, practical and welcoming social centre is essential for every family's well-being, the health of a nation may just depend on the heart of America's new presidential home.
We present three concepts for the Obamas' new family kitchen created by Johnny Grey Network designers. These sketches incorporate elements such as democratic planning, free-standing furniture and soft geometry, which are all hallmarks of Johnny Grey's approach to the "sociable kitchen."
Kids, cooking and kitchens. Three words that even sound like they belong together. Creating spaces that cater to all members of the family is an essential ingredient in designing a sociable kitchen. Check out our new page featuring a series of concept sketches of kitchen furniture for kids, as well design-inspired recipes from C'est Si Bon cooking school.
We've also created a list of tips on how to design family-friendly kitchens, how to use them, and last but not least, how to teach kids to cook in them.
The kitchen Johnny Grey Studios designed for Amy Hunt and Robert Bezek's home in Anchorage, Alaska is featured in the current issue of Alaska Home Magazine. Noting that the kitchen is "an area of the house that is anything but an accident" Mara Severin writes:
"'It's a signature kitchen,' says Robert. 'The style of the kitchen really is Johnny Grey. It's a strong expression.' The egg-shaped island, the curved cabinetry, and the intricate and layered use of rare and beautiful woods - ribbon maple, walnut, olive burl, waterfall bubinga - are Johnny Grey trademarks."
Johnny provided his thoughts on kitchens for the new decade in "The interiors your home needs in 2010", an article appearing in the Sunday Times on January 3. Jessie Hewitson and Anna Mikhailova wrote:
"Don't let the fact you use a kitchen to prepare food constrain the way it looks. Think of it more as a living room in which you cook - especially now the dining room has been pronounced dead.
'Use furniture you wouldn't normally find in a kitchen, so when you enter it looks like a sitting room, but when you start cooking, the kitchen element springs to life,' advises Johnny Grey, the kitchen-design supremo."
To celebrate our foray into the world of social media, we'll be posting a kitchen design tip of the day on our Twitter account. How to build it, design it, or cook it - all in 140 characters or less. You're in for a tweet!
Just as we strive to create kitchens that are more than just a room where you cook - in other words, a kitchen to live in - here we serve up some food for thought. Read our blog 'Grey Matters' for the latest on our ongoing projects, recent media coverage and our reflections on current design trends.
