Poetry and function

Posted by duncan on April 15th, 2008

Using a house is not just about having your functional needs met, it’s about having the conditions that expand your mood, beyond your immediate needs. For example getting up in the morning and going to a ‘sweet spot’ which perhaps has a view of a garden, near a window within the arc of sunlight.. A soft, supportive surface (a reason for upholstery) to lie on to read, drink tea, or perch on for a chat with your partner and feel your way slowly into the day. Options of this not being a bedroom is where design brings luxury. In a warm climate it could be a veranda or in the garden. In a cold one an alcove off a kitchen or a deep chair next to a heat source. By triggering hormones that prepare you for the day, putting the body clock back into gear, without starting the day over tired or in a panic, design can bring poetry and function together.
